FOTD: Mmmm Purple

I don't do purple or pink looks very often.  When I use these colors, I like to throw them in with blues.  I figured it was about time I forced myself to do a girly girl purple look so I don't get too rusty.

How are you guys liking the pictures coming off my monster camera (Nikon D7000)?  I'm finally able to use it for my makeup looks cause I got a better fitted lens!  Only thing is, the flash kills the color.  In these pictures, the look is very soft and subdued but it was a full on smoky eye in person.  Even I felt a bit odd wearing this to work.

Sorry about posting and running.  I wanted to get this up on the actual day of 9/11 before I run off to work.  I hope you enjoyed the look!

Update:
I wanted to take a moment and reflect upon this tragic occurrence 12 years ago on this day.  We remember the thousands of civilians who fell victim to this terrorist attack.  We remember the firefighters, search dogs, paramedics, and other individuals who risked their lives for the sake of others.  We remember a day when the entire nation came together in mourning.

9-11 has given Americans a reason to stand together, but sadly, hate crimes against Muslims and individuals of Middle Eastern decent have also escalated.  Hate only fuels hate, and the crimes that stem from it kills too many people.  The United States of America is far from being a perfect country, but it is a country that gave second chances and a new life to so many people.  It is a country that is meant to give equal rights to everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, sex, ethnic background, or social status.

So let us mourn for the lives lost on this day 12 years ago, remember the heroes, and take note that our country could do with a lot less hate in our lives.  And that, of course, starts with us.

Thank you for reading.

FOTD: Comeback

Hey ladies and germs~

I've got a FOTD for you guys today!  Woohoo!  For the past couple months I've been so busy and uninspired that I've been pretty much been doing the same exact look every single day.  It had become such a habit for me that it was actually kind of difficult to break out of.

Today I had extra time to do my makeup and I really had to force myself to break outside my box.  I decided not to over think it too much and go back to a look that I know that I will like and is everything but neutral.  Those of you who have been following my blog for a while may have seen a similar look before.

Yeah, I did go back to my trusty point and shoot.  My Nikon is just too difficult to take selfies with :(

One of my former classmates recruited me to do makeup for a photoshoot of hers to promote her business.  Part of her business was promoting local artists, such as myself.  I was told I would be interviewed and filmed so I wanted to do something a little special with my makeup.  I love love love my brights so I had to pull out some Sugarpill eyeshadows.

FOTD: Neutral look gone wrong

Believe it or not, I meant to do a quick look with neutrals, since they are idiot proof and easy to use.  I even started out with a chocolate brown in the crease.  But when I looked around to see what color I should pop on my lids, I spotted Sugarpill's Tipsy on my desk and it all went down hill from there.  I absolutely love the result, so I can't complain.

Green, purple, blue, pink...if only the colors were more prominent.

FOTD: NYE

Herro everyone!

I hope you guys all had a safe but fun filled New Year's Eve.  Mine was pretty calm and chill.  I went out to get drinks with my coworkers at around 8pm, and got back home at 11.  I wanted to avoid most of the drunkards out in public but not be confined to my house for the evening.  Didn't go too crazy with my makeup.  I sported a smoky eye without meaning to.  I'll explain after I show you the pictures.  This is, by the way, unofficially episode IV of my stash-shopping mission.  Go me!

Again, items marked with an asterisk (*) are the "new" items I used.

FOTD: Blogger Beauty

I truly hate how my eyes are so uneven.  I've noticed that this is a common trait amongst us, Asians: our right eye tends to be slightly hooded while our left eye is "normal," making our right eyes seem smaller than the left.  It really screws me over when I do my makeup.  And what's more frustrating is that I don't see how different my makeup looks on each eye until I take pictures and check it out myself.  This is probably because I'm too busy squinting at the mirror without my glasses.  Argh.

In any case, I find my eye makeup very very boring.  Always have.  When I'm in a rush, it's always so much easier to throw on something natural that I know will work.  I had a bit of extra time today so I threw on some colors I tend not to reach for: pink, yellow, and orange.

I originally wanted to do a bright pink look, but I thought orange and yellow would go well with the pink so I threw that into the mix as well.  I made an attempt at a cut crease which ended up being very sloppy, but ah well.  I will do better next time!

My First Hair Show Competition! (Pic heavy)

Happy Sunday, everyone!

I've been talking a lot about this competition in my past few posts, but never actually posted the pictures to show you guys!  Sorry!  Here's the gist of it:  A local hairshow was holding student competitions for anybody who is not yet a licensed cosmetologists.  Students work in teams, with each team consisting of one hairstylist, one makeup artist, one nail technician, and one model.  The theme was Hawaiin Fantasy: Earth, Wind, and Fire.  During the competition, teams have one hour to complete the look.  Hairstylists may prep the hair by setting it in rollers before the competition, and the nail technician may glue on tips or form the acrylic nails beforehand as well.  Makeup artists.....can't do jack.  Not even foundation.  During the competition, hair, makeup, and nails must be worked on simultaneously.

Needless to say, I did the makeup.  My team decided to go for a Volcano theme, and we wanted to make the entire look as extravagant as possible.  We were told that we would be judged so, even though the emphasis was on nails, makeup, and hair.  The hair stylist went for banana peeled hair, but added more elements after I overheard my teacher saying that we would be judged on the five elements of design present in the hair style.  The nail technician used long, sparkly tips adhered with acrylics.  On them, she placed different sized rocks, some red rhinestones, and some red nail polish in between the rocks to resemble flowing lava.  For the makeup, we agreed to go for something dark, and steer away from beautiful, everyday makeup.  I drew inspiration from fire that burns bright, but at the same time leaving charred bits behind.  However, I still wanted to show that I wasn't simply face painting, so I used neutral colors on one eye, but with Arabic style eyeliner.  I also added lots of gold and red pigment fall out to match the theme.

Doing prep work.  From left to right: Rachell (nail tech), Taniel (model), Kim (hair stylist)

After the judging and competition had taken place.

One of our rival teams

The 3 models from the 3 different teams in the competition

Check out those crazy red contacts!

The other rival team

My team with our head instructor, Ms. Thomas

Check out these wicked nails!

People crowded around Taniel to ask if her hair was real, how her nails were done, and if they could
take pictures of her.

FIRST PLACE!!!!

I was screaming my head off with joy.

Proud and with one of our other instructors.

Prize:  A set of foundations.

:)
We had a few complications with the process, but luckily enough we were able to make do.  First off, the model was an hour and a half late--the nail tech and hair stylist had to get her prepped in 30 minutes as opposed to the original 2 hours.  The foil originally adhered to the gown with moss, flowers, and rocks glued on it started ripping, so I tied the red material around her waist to hide it.  The red material was originally supposed to be constructed as a veil.  In the end the foil fell off completely.  At least her overall look was still coherent!  There was also a cup of dry ice on her head which bubbled nicely until right before the judges started the judging so we didn't get the points for that.  All in all, it felt really good to win because my team and I had spent so much time preparing and visualizing the final outcome.

Hope you guys enjoyed this post!  I know it was lengthy but I wanted to make be thorough.  Can't wait for the next competition!
